Juvenalia - The Crimson Twig

The scanning of my old writing papers continues!  This week, I’m tackling a bunch of pencil-and-scrap-paper comics I made when I was 13.  That’s…wow, that’s exactly half my life ago, almost to the day.  Geez.

Those of you who’ve read The Arc of Time (hint, hint) have seen one or two references to The Crimson Twig, Woodvale’s first vigilante.  Part of the reason I know the whole history of his career is because I was preparing to write a series about him and his friends before I started writing School Kids SG.  These comics I’ve been scanning are simultaneously some of the best and some of the groaningly, blushingly worst entries in that portfolio.  This means that I either have to post them here, or I have to avoid doing so at all costs.  In the interest of fun, I’ve chosen the former.

The Twig will get his own, truly-canon feature someday, I promise.  Until then, these images are the only peek you’ll get…just try not to stare at them too hard.

Updates and Nav Icons

Point one: I have recently discovered a very intelligently-written blog called The Busy Signal, which is staffed mostly, if not entirely, by Bard alumni (I went to Bard, in case you’re just tuning in).  Great viewpoints, impeccable word choice, and what seems to be a wide variety of different styles–what more could you want?  It’s worth your attention…I know this site is going straight on my sidebar the next time I update my template.

Point two: I’ve been writing like crazy the past few weeks.  School Kids SG is constantly surprising me, but I’ve got some really great encouragement behind me, and I think I’m building up enough momentum to make a big announcement in…the not too distant future.  In the meantime, here’s some photographic proof of how much work I’m putting into this:

Point three: somehow, I’ve been finding time to keep up with my few non-SKSG-related endeavors.  None of these are anywhere near ready to make public, but as a bizarre preview/point of interest, here are some navigation icons I’ve been designing:

Graduation

My baby sister is graduating college this weekend!  Which means I have to drive up to Vermont, which, in turn, means I have little to no time to write anything here.  Rather than rush out some text on what I’ve been writing this week, only to be dissatisfied with it later, I’m choosing instead to post some pictures of where I’m headed.  Regardless of the reason, it’ll be nice to get out of the city.

Prepare to envy me!

Art is Coming

Probably not by Friday, but soon…I’ve been drawing for the last few hours.  One of my little creative secrets is that I don’t draw very often–unless I have a specific reason to (website splash page, book cover) or I get suddenly inspired (like tonight), I’d rather be writing.  In high school, I could sometimes go months without sketching a single thing; through college and the years immediately after, I got more consistent in part because I doodled a lot.  I feel like that helped me gain confidence, but I’ve unfortunately gotten in the habit of suppressing that impulse (to avoid getting in trouble at various day jobs I’ve had), so my drawing has been sporadic again recently.  These gaps in practice mean that I’m constantly re-learning and altering my technique.  Sometimes this can help me break frustrating blocks–other times, it makes me forget how to draw even the most common items, like Mark’s shirt, or Jenn.

To be fair, I haven’t drawn Jenn full-size in ages (she only appeared in tiny profile form on The Arc of Time’s cover), and most of the drawings I’ve done of Mark in the last year have been in unusual shirts.  Still, it was definitely time to start refreshing myself.

Also, I bought Cartel’s Cycles today after hearing one of the songs on Pandora (it also helped that I’d seen the album sitting somewhere in AP’s top 10 for the last three or four months).  So far, I’m loving it.

Two Donovans

Anyone who’s ever done any sort of writing knows how many revisions you sometimes have to go through before you’re satisfied.  The Arc of Time was particularly demanding for me in this regard.  In the spirit of being open about my editing process, here are two separate explanations of how Lyle met Donovan, from two different drafts of School Kids SG episode one.  Let me know what you think–which passage do you think is newer?

Need Your Help!

So I’m tinkering with the site layout again, moving toward a possible major change in the near future.  But before I can fix stuff, I need to know what to fix.  School Kids SG looks great to me in Firefox 3.6.3, but I noticed that in the Wii system browser, the sidebar sits below the main content pane.  That’s really not good.  I hate to think that I’m coming off as a fool to my readers.

This is a formal request–please, if you see anything weird around here, let me know what’s wrong and tell me what browser you’re using.  I’ve done quite a bit of troubleshooting myself, but I only have my own configuration to work with, so I might not be able to see everything I need to.  Any help at all will be much appreciated!
