This service is turning into a racket, or, at the very least, it is taking too much for granted. Hotmail's users will not, and should not, continue to be loyal in the face of every corporate machination and power grab they bear witness to. Ironically, the best way to send Hotmail a message may be to send no more.

This sounds like a well orchestrated ploy to force people into buying a “premium” (meaning non-crippled) account. I whole heartedly agree with your decision to drop Hotmail…seriously…this is akin to the post office rifling through your letters and refusing to send them due to misconstrued “intent” charges. Firstly, it’s an egregious violation of privacy, and secondly, the intent of your words is thoroughly irrelevant - they are protected under the first amendment. Whether you are engaging in friendly correspondence, or pushing phallus enhancing products, you have a right to send what you want. (That said, I thank God for spam filters.)

Also, does Hotmail genuinely believe you’re a spambot that has deviously established a meaningful rapport with dozens of individuals over the years, easing them into complacency with the intent of making the upcoming onslaught of lesbian porn and penis pills appear to be genuine conversation? Of course not. The Hotmail moderators know very well that ninety-nine percent of spam is generated en mass and literally bulk mailed by the millions. This stinks of an invasive money grab.

So yea…GMail is different, but awesome. I hope you enjoy your trial run. Peace!

ADDENDUM: I pass no judgment when I say this, nor mean to insult anyone’s personal integrity, but it appears your friend supports the right of a robot to screen and filter your messages over the right of a human to type and send whatever he damn well pleases.

One of these two things is protected in the Bill of Rights.

Haha, thanks for the comments. For the record, my friend’s counterargument wasn’t made with a lot of gusto…generally speaking, he thinks the same way I do. I think it just brought him up a little short when I went so far as to say that spammers have the right to send actual spam…I hadn’t come up with the notion that “’spam’ is an after-the-fact designation” at that point. The cornerstone of his argument, which had more to do with phishing than spamming, was that it would be illegal to obtain and use someone’s e-mail address without their consent, or to misrepresent yourself (ex. pretending to be Paypal), and this would be sufficient proof of intent to stop you before you send messages. Again, though, unless there’s already some sort of ongoing investigation into a particular sender, none of this is possible to judge automatically before the message is sent. Even something that looks like a lie or a trap could be a joke between friends.

I had thought of the post office analogy and almost put it in my original post. Well said!
