God, Pandora Radio is Smart

Well, it is.  Like so many other popular things, I know how late I am to the party on this one, but there you have it.

Is Ice Supposed to Do This?

I.e., this:

icespikes.jpg

These spikes spontaneously extended into the air overnight a few days ago, after I put the tray into the freezer with fresh water; I found them the next morning.  I have no idea how that would’ve happened.  But just to be on the safe side, in case it was some kind of chemical reaction, I threw out the offending cubes and took some of the others.

But not before taking a picture.

(Or before breaking the spikes off just for fun).

Upgrading Wordpress

Hi, everyone.

As some of you may know, I use Wordpress as the backend of this site.  My Wordpress version has been in need of an upgrade for some time, and I’m going to try and finally get that done in the next week or so.  If you see any weirdness around the site during this time, that’s probably why, and if something isn’t working the way it should be, I strongly encourage you to tell me.  (If e-mail’s not your thing, you can also just leave a comment on this or any post).

Love, your hard-working author,

Jon

An Embarassment of Riches

I’ve spoken about video games on here several times before, and once again, I’ve reached a point where there are just too many games that I want to play.  For the most part, this sort of backlog happens because there’s very little time I can or want to dedicate to video games versus work or writing (or going out), but this time a contributing factor is my new computer.  The upgrade has suddenly made it possible for me to play a pile of games I’ve received as gifts over the last 2 years, all of which I could leave to the side and forget about when I had no way to run them.  Not that I’m complaining, of course–with how hard I’ve been working lately, a variety of fun diversions sounds pretty attractive.

Click on “Keep reading” to see a list of games that have piqued my interest lately.

Something to Post

Aaargh.  I have so many posts in my drafts folder just itching to go up on this page, but I just can’t get them quite right.  There’s stuff about politics, more of “The Fall of Love,” some world-building stuff related to Woodvale…and now I’m going away for the weekend!  Man, this is frustrating.

But tonight, I want to direct your attention to something you’ve probably seen before, but which came before me in a whole new light recently.  It’s Garfield Minus Garfield, the blog project that removes the titular character from Jim Davis’s Garfield strip and winds up with a depressing-yet-funny meditation on loneliness starring Jon Arbuckle.  That page will probably suck up at least 15 minutes of your life, especially if you haven’t seen it before, but what’s really awesome is this post.  It would seem that even after more than 30 years of making Garfield strips, Jim Davis still has a good sense of humor and an open mind.  I am very impressed with him.

And I’m actually looking forward to the book now!  A slightly darker, more serious take on Garfield reminds me of one of the most surprising storylines from the entire series, which greatly interested me because it was such a complete non-sequitor.  The tone was one of fear-based character exploration, and the art was some of the best Jim Davis has ever done, IMHO.  Unfortunately, the online Garfield “vault” apparently doesn’t let you link directly to a specific date anymore, but if you go to this page and click the “Search” link on the left, you can enter the starting date of the sequence I’m referring to: October 23rd, 1989.  It’s worth the effort, I promise.
